History

Researchers date the birth of chiropractic as September 18, 1895, when Daniel David (usually called “D. D.”) Palmer (1845-1913) manipulated a single upper thoracic vertebra of Harvey Lillard in a downtown Davenport, Iowa office building. D.D adjusted the janitor’s spine, and restored his hearing.

Today, chiropractic offers an evidence-based approach to pain relief and much improved function.

ACTUAL DOCTORS

While chiropractors don't hold a medical doctor (MD) degree, they are Doctors of Chiropractic Care. Their studies include many of the same subjects that MDs study. These include physiology, orthopedics, anatomy, neurology, microbiology, radiology, and more.

HOLISTIC APPROACH:

Chiropractors play a vital role in holistic health because they don’t just treat symptoms. Literally holistic means treating the body as a whole.  These days when you have a medical problem your Primary Care Physician won’t address the problem but will send you to a specialist because medicine today breaks the body into specific parts. These specialists know less and less about the body in general and only know about your hand, your knee, or in whatever part of your body you have an ailment. They are unable to address the fact that your specific problem could originate somewhere else entirely.

SUPPLEMENTS:

To accompany your treatments Dr. Livingston will also recommend specific supplements to be certain that you are getting the important vitamins, minerals, and nutrients that are necessary to maintain the optimal health achieved through holistic chiropractic medicine.

DETOXIFICATION:

On a daily basis our bodies are filled with toxins from the foods we eat, the air we breathe, and other things that we may contact on a daily basis. These toxins interfere with our organs’ ability to function with one another. When the toxin load becomes too great a multitude of symptoms will arise. This can be anything from sleepiness, and poor concentration to chronic disease.

Because of local energy flow, the toxic buildup is often located in the spine which will result in spinal misalignment. By Dr. Livingston restoring the spinal alignment, natural detox pathways are opened, and future toxic buildup is prevented. This restoration is part of Dr. Livingston’s holistic approach. He may also recommend some vitamin and mineral supplements in order to maintain optimal health.

APPLIED KINESIOLOGY:

known as Manual Muscle Testing. Because there is a definite correlation between muscle weakness and internal issues, AK is often used to diagnose structural, and muscular ailments as well as to identify food allergies and intolerances.

Massage

Massage is a powerful tool for healing, as it increases circulation, which aids in delivering oxygen and nutrients to tissues, promoting faster recovery. It also reduces muscle tension, alleviates pain, and helps the body relax, which is crucial for reducing stress and encouraging natural healing processes.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture can be highly effective in relieving muscle pain and soreness by stimulating specific points in the body to improve energy flow, reduce inflammation, and promote blood circulation. When fine needles are inserted at targeted points, it triggers the release of natural pain-relieving chemicals, like endorphins, and can help relax tight muscles and reduce tension. This process aids in breaking up knots or adhesions within muscle tissue, helping the body heal and recover more quickly from physical strain or injury. Acupuncture’s impact on circulation and the nervous system also supports overall recovery and reduces discomfort from chronic muscle soreness.

COMPREHENSIVE FOOD SENSITIVITY TEST:

Dr. Livingston may order a comprehensive food sensitivity test if you are showing unwanted symptoms or reactions to food. Here are some of the typical reactions to food that some of our patients experience.

Intolerance or sensitivity to certain foods. Some examples are being
(a) lactose intolerant (when you can’t process the type of sugar that is in milk). Intolerance and food sensitivity often have the same symptoms as allergic reactions do.
(b) Sensitivity to the protein that is in wheat, barley and rye (gluten).

What patients do I recommend getting the food sensitivity test?
The answer is any of my patients who are suffering with digestive symptoms but can’t pinpoint which foods are causing these symptoms. There are several sensitivities to certain foods that develop as we age. Not all food sensitivities are rooted in our childhoods. A diagnosis is possible when we order the Food Sensitivity Test.

Some of the symptoms that our patients experience with food sensitivity are abdominal (stomach) pain, bloating (always feeling as if your stomach is full of gas), gas, diarrhea, tiredness, constipation, skin rashes, and headaches. Symptoms generally begin in a short time after eating and during the time when the food is making its way through your digestive system. This usually happens shortly after eating, but sometimes, it takes a few hours or even a few days to happen. This scenario adds to the difficulty of finding the food which is causing the reaction.

DRYNEEDLING:

When Dr. Livingston feels you need dry needling he inserts a very thin needle under your skin to stimulate a trigger point or to release tight fascia. This procedure is very effective for releasing muscle knots and alleviating your pain.

TENDON INJURIES: MUSCLE STRAINS OR SPRAINS:

Good chiropractic care is essential in supporting overall tendon health and preventing tendinitis as well as healing tendon injury. Our holistic approach begins with addressing the underlying problem of your misaligned joints. Tendonitis is the result of repetitive movement, overuse, or injury causing the tendon to become inflamed and painful. It can usually be avoided by properly doing stretching before exercising. As part of our holistic approach to healing, we will teach you these stretching exercises.

STRESS MANAGEMENT:

Humans have a huge mind-body connection which is why stress and anxiety affecting our mental health are also impacting our physical health. When we are experiencing stress and anxiety our body releases cortisol (a stress hormone) which leads to increased muscle tension and inflammation.  At Livingston Chiropractic we will use massage therapy to relax your muscles and improve your circulation. We will also recommend some lifestyle changes such as diet, home exercises,  sleep schedules, and deep breathing exercises.
